| 2/17/2024 | Softball | Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – Thanks to a pair of shutouts in the circle and timely late-game hitting, the Florida Atlantic softball team finished the Joan Joyce Classic with victories over Michigan, 1-0, and Seton Hall, 10-0, on Saturday at the FAU Softball Stadium. Zoey Jones drove in the game’s lone run in the 1-0 win over Michigan with Trinity Schlotterbeck tossing a complete-game gem. In the nightcap, Becca Jones launched a walk-off, pinch-hit, three-run homer down the left-field line as the Owls run-ruled the Pirates, 10-0, in five innings. Florida Atlantic has won four straight and seven of its last eight to improve to 8-3 overall. Michigan slipped to 6-3, while Seton Hall fell to 1-3. The day began with Florida Atlantic officially dedicating the softball field as Joan Joyce Field during a pregame ceremony that included a number of Joyce’s former players, and Joan’s brother, Joey. Joyce, a member of 21 different athletics halls of fame, coached the Owls for 28 years, building the program from its inception and winning 1,002 games before her passing at the age of 81 in 2022. JOAN JOYCE CEREMONY GAME ONE FAU 1, Michigan 0 It was scoreless until the sixth inning when Kiley Channell got things started for FAU by leading off with a single to right. Kamryn Jackson moved her over with a sacrifice bunt and Zoey Jones later delivered the eventual winning hit when she ripped a single to center that scored Channell. Schlotterbeck did the rest, retiring the Wolverines in order in the seventh to slam the door on the Owls’ seventh win. The graduate transfer from Maryland scattered five hits over her complete game in the circle to improve to 3-1 this season. Florida Atlantic out-hit Michigan, 7-5, with Lauren Derkowski taking the tough-luck loss after pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts. GAME TWO FAU 10, Seton Hall 0 The Owls opened a 4-0 lead in the second inning and run-ruled the Pirates thanks to a six-run fifth inning. Gabby Sacco improved to 3-1 in the circle by scattering two hits over five innings with two strikeouts.Leading 7-0 in the home half of the fifth inning, Becca Jones stepped to the plate with two on and ended the game in walk-off fashion by with her first home run this season that hugged the left-field foul pole.Six of FAU’s nine hits in the game came from the bottom of the order with Zoey Jones, Katelynn de Leon and Jesiana Mora each going 2-for-3. NOTES Schlotterback beat the Wolverines on April 14, 2022 as a member of the Terrapins – throwing a complete game and allowing one run with four strikeouts.Of Florida Atlantic’s eight wins this season, three have come via shutout – including two tonight.Florida Atlantic played error-free in both games of the doubleheader. The team has committed just six errors through 11 games this season.
