DETROIT – The Motor City Cruise, NBA G League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, announced today they acquired Jayce Johnson from the Santa Cruz Warriors in exchange for a 2024 first round pick. In a related move, the Cruise have waived Nate Roberts.
Johnson (7’0”, 245 lbs.) was selected with the ninth pick of the second round in the 2022 NBA G League Draft by the Santa Cruz Warriors. In his first two NBA G League seasons, Johnson has appeared in 59 games (29 starts) across the regular season and showcase cup while averaging 7.8 points, 11.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 21.7 minutes per game. Johnson played five games with the Golden State Warriors during the 2023 NBA Summer League and averaged 5.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 16.2 minutes per game.
Prior to his NBA G League career, Johnson played one year overseas in the Romania Divizia and FIBA Europe Cup league, representing CSU Atlassib Sibiu (Romania). In 27 games (11 starts), Johnson averaged 7.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 16.5 minutes per game.
Johnson graduated from Marquette after spending his first three years of college at the University of Utah. In a total of 118 games (33 starts), Johnson averaged 5.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 0.3 assists in 16.3 minutes per game during his college career.
The Cruise will look to start the regular season 3-0 for the second time in their third year as a franchise on Saturday, Dec. 30, when they visit the Capital City Go-Go at Entertainment & Sports Arena (Washington, D.C.).
