UF S&D | Gators Impress in Day One of Finals at Pan Americans 2023

Mason Laur takes home gold and Adam Chaney and Alfonso Mestre win silver in day one of the Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mason Laur, Adam Chaney and Alfonso Mestre and earned trips to the podium in the first round of finals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Swimming events kicked off this morning and go through October 25.

Representing Team USA, Mason Laur earned gold in the Men’s 200 Butterfly after clocking a 1:56.44 to come within a second of his personal best 1:55.67. The junior earned a spot in the finals after swimming a 1:57.58 to place first in his preliminary heat. Laur gave the US their fourth victory in day one and is scheduled to compete in the Men’s 200 IM on Wednesday, October 25.

Adam Chaney was a part of Team’s USA silver finish in the Men’s 4 x 100m free relay, that swam a 3:14.22 in the finals heat. The senior is set to compete in the Men’s 100m backstroke on October 23 as well as the Men’s 4 x 100m medley relay and the Mixed 100m medley relay.

Former Gator, Alfonso Mestre won silver in the Men’s 400 Freestyle after touching the wall in 3:47.62, which is just shy of his personal-best 3:46.61. Mestre, who is representing Venezuela, also placed fifth in the Men’s 4×100 free relay with a time of 3:20.79. He is set to compete in the Men’s 200m, 800m, and 1500m free, and two relays: Men’s 4x100m free relay and the Mixed 4 x 100m free relay.

Top athletes from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean’s will come together in Santiago, Chile, from October 20th to November 5th  for the Pan American Games 2023. More than 100 direct qualification spots to the Paris 2024 Olympics will be available, with swimming being one.
