Volleyball – Sharks Sweep Way to Pair of Wins at South Region Crossover

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Volleyball team swept both of its matches to begin the South Region Crossover on Friday afternoon from the Game Point Center. NSU defeated Auburn-Montgomery in straight sets and also pulled off a three-set upset victory over No. 15 West Florida.

How it Happened

MATCH ONE 

  • The Sharks were able to claim the early momentum in the first set against Auburn-Montgomery, as NSU took an 8-2 lead.  
  • Nadia LindnerTaylor Stockman and Kate Mihacevich recorded three consecutive kills during the rally.  
  • Nova Southeastern extended its lead to 12-7 following a service ace from Mihacevich.  
  • Lindner tallied three consecutive kills for NSU, extending the lead to 17-10 over AUM. 
  • Later in the set, Lindner, Stockman and Mihacevich once again led a 3-0 rally, as each recorded a kill, putting NSU ahead 24-12.  
  • The Sharks claimed the opening set 25-14 over AUM.  
  • Elizabeth Price capped a 4-1 rally for Nova Southeastern to begin the second set with a service ace.  
  • Lindner recorded three consecutive kills for NSU, putting the Sharks ahead 9-7.  
  • The second set was a back-and-forth affair, as late in the set both the Sharks and Warhawks were tied at 20-20.  
  • Lindner’s seventh kill of the second set, her 13th in the match, was the 1,000th of her collegiate career and put NSU in front 26-25.  
  • Nova Southeastern closed out the second set with a 29-27 victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.  
  • In the third-set, Landrum sparked a 4-0 rally, which was capped by a Mihacevich service ace, as NSU led 8-6.  
  • A 7-2 run by Nova Southeastern extended the Sharks lead to 15-9 over Auburn-Montgomery.  
  • Lindner finished off the three-set sweep, the Sharks fifth consecutive victory, with her 19th kill of the match, as the Sharks claimed the final set 25-16.

How it Happened
MATCH TWO

  • West Florida took an early 6-4 lead over NSU, but the Sharks responded with a 5-0 rally, as Lindner tallied a pair of kills, to take a 9-6 advantage over the Argonauts.  
  • Taylor Stockman and Maddy Hooper teamed up to record a block, putting the Sharks ahead 13-8 midway through the first set.  
  • Hooper sparked a 3-0 rally for the Sharks with a kill, before Landrum and Stockman capped the run with a block, putting Nova Southeastern ahead 17-10.  
  • No. 15 West Florida battled back into the set, ultimately taking a 24-23 lead over NSU, but Lindner halted the Argonauts momentum with a kill and tied the set at 24-24.  
  • Trailing 26-25, Mihacevich guided the Sharks to the set victory by bookending a 3-0 rally, recording a kill and the service ace, as Nova Southeastern claimed the opening set 28-26.  
  • In the second set, Lindner recorded four consecutive points (three kills, one block) to give NSU a 6-4 lead.  
  • Mihacevich started a 6-1 rally for the Sharks, starting the run with a kill before closing it with a service ace, putting NSU ahead 14-11.  
  • Later in the set, Stockman started a 4-0 run, giving Nova Southeastern a 24-19 lead.  
  • Lindner closed out the 25-20 set win, putting the Sharks ahead 2-0 in the match, with another kill.  
  • Nova Southeastern was trailing in the third set 7-4, but NSU capitalized on a pair of Argonaut errors – in addition to kills from Landrum and Stockman – and took an 8-7 lead over West Florida. 
  • NSU continued to battle throughout the set, never letting West Florida maintain momentum for large stretches. The Sharks trailed 17-13, but Lindner and Hooper led a 4-0 rally to tie the third set at 17-17.  
  • West Florida took a 24-21 set lead, as the Sharks faced set point, but Landrum led an impressive 5-0 rally, as Nova Southeastern came all the way back to stun No. 15 West Florida and pull off the three-set upset win.

I was very proud of our ability to follow a scouting report and weather a few rough patches. Nadia Lindner had an excellent day, picking up her 1,000th collegiate kill in the first match, and continued to play excellent into the second match of the day. Gabrielle Spankus did a great job moving the ball around and setting an efficient offense.” 

What's Next

Nova Southeastern returns to action on Saturday, October 21, taking on Gulf South Conference opponent Lee in the third and final match of the South Region Crossover. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
