USF Volleyball: South Florida Falls to Wichita State

WICHITA, Kansas, October 8, 2023 – The University of South Florida volleyball team (11-7, 5-2 AAC) fell to the Wichita State Shockers (11-5, 5-1 AAC) on Sunday afternoon.  

The Bulls fell with scores of 21-25, 16-25, 21-25. 

Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) led South Florida with 14 kills, her ninth straight match with double-digit kills. Maria Clara Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) followed with 11 kills, her 10th time this season with double-digit kills. Niki Khoshatefeh (Temecula, Calif.) and Marta Cvitkovic (Rijeka, Croatia) had three block assists, while Tizi Puljiz (Resistencia, Argentina) had the lone solo block.  

Wichita State jumped out to an early 13-9 lead over South Florida. The Bulls battled their way to within one, but the Shockers took the first set.  

The Green and Gold scored the first two points of the second set. The Shockers quickly retook the lead. Wichita State went on a late 6-1 run to grow their lead to 21-13 and eventually took the second set.  

South Florida battled from behind to take a 15-14 lead over Wichita State. The Shockers answered with three straight points and kept the momentum to complete the sweep.  

NOTABLES 

  • Andrade led with three service aces. 
  • The Bulls finished with five service aces, while the Shockers had four. 
  • Caroline Dykes (Flower Mound, Texas) had 29 assists. 
  • Miya Thomas (Gainesville) led with 10 digs.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls’ program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972.
