South Florida Women’s Basketball Locks In AAC Slate

IRVING, Texas Sept. 21, 2023 – Entering his 24th season as head coach of the University of South Florida women’s basketball program, Jose Fernandez announced the program’s 2023-24 American Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule on Friday.

This year’s scheduling model features 18 contests, an expansion from the previous 16-game slate. Each conference member will play five of its 13 opponents twice, while facing eight opponents a single time, split between four home and four road matchups.

The league slate is highlighted with a trio of linear games, two of which will be played at the Yuengling Center (Charlotte, Jan. 3, & East Carolina, Jan. 28).  USF’s road game at Rice (Jan. 14) rounds out the linear contests.

HOME AND HOME MATCHUPS

This year the Bulls will double up against East Carolina, Rice, SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa. The Pirates competed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Games: SMU (12/30/23), at Tulane (1/6/24), Tulsa (1/10/24), at Rice (1/14/24), East Carolina (1/28/24), Rice (2/7/24), at East Carolina (2/21/24), at Tulsa (2/25/24), Tulane (3/2/24), and at SMU (3/5/24).

YUENGLING CENTER PAIRINGS

USF will welcome Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and Wichita State to the friendly confines of the Yuengling Center for home-only pairings.

Games: Charlotte (1/3/24), North Texas (1/20/24), Wichita State (2/13/24), and Florida Atlantic (2/17/24).

LEAGUE ROAD CONTESTS

South Florida will hit the road for away game-only contests against UAB, Memphis, Temple, and UTSA.

Games: at UTSA (1/16/24), at Memphis (2/1/24), at UAB (2/3/24), and at Temple (2/10/24).

USF’s notable returners include Sammie Puisis (Senior, Guard), Carla Brito (Sophomore, Forward), and Aerial Wilson (R-Senior, Guard).
 
This past season, South Florida posted a 27-7 overall record and held a 15-1 mark in conference action. The 2022-23 campaign was concluded on a high note, as the program made its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, marking its eighth trip to the Big Dance in the last 11 years. USF has advanced to the postseason 18 times in the club’s history.
 
Included in their 27 wins were ranked victories against No. 22/18 Texas, 70-65, a gritty 66-65 overtime win versus No. 17/19 Arkansas in the San Diego Invitational, and a 67-65, comeback overtime triumph against ninth-seeded Marquette in the first round of March Madness.

All home games and conference games not televised nationally will be televised on ESPN+. Tip times will be released at a later date.

South Florida women’s basketball recorded its 11th 20-win season during the 2022-23 campaign. USF has made 18 postseason tournament appearances and had nine NCAA Tournament berths in head coach Jose Fernandez’s 23 seasons. The all-time winningest coach in program history, Fernandez has guided USF to 11 20-win seasons, two WNIT final four appearances, the 2009 WNIT championship, has won over 400 career games, and is the all-time wins leader in the American Athletic Conference.

In 2022-23, the Bulls had four players recognized by The American for impressive seasons, including Elena Tsineke (AAC Co-Player of the Year, All-Conference First Team), Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu (AAC Co-Player of the Year, All-Conference First Team), Sammie Puisis (AAC Newcomer of the Year, All-Conference Second Team) and Carla Brito (AAC All-Freshman Team).
