American Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Release – September 21

Games Around The American

South Florida will play their first conference game this weekend, when they look to take home their second Top 15 win in the month of September as they host No. 6/3 SMU on Friday at 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Temple and UAB will look to get in the win column as the Owls host the Blazers at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday on ESPN+, while (RV) FIU will travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Panthers Look to Continue Winning Ways

Defending American Champions FIU Panthers opened the season with a 5-1 win over Temple last week.  FIU has now won six straight matches against conference opponents with their last loss coming October 9, 2022, against UCF. They will look to push their winning streak to seven games on Saturday when they travel to Memphis.

SMU Finding Stride

The 6th-ranked SMU Mustangs hold the fourth longest winning streak in the nation with four straight wins.  They are one of seven schools with at least six wins. The Mustangs are averaging just under two goals per game and lead the nation in corner kicks per game (7.86).

American in the Rankings

SMU continues to climb the national rankings in both the United Soccer Coaches Poll and Top Drawer Soccer Poll. They have vaulted inside the top 10, earning the highest ranking from an American team this year. The Mustangs are ranked 6th in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and 3rd in the TDS poll. The Mustangs were one of two teams to receive a first place vote in the United Sate Coaches Poll, along with No. 1 Marshall.  FIU is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll.

Charlotte Defense Holds Firm In Conference Opener

After being known for their offense a season ago, the Charlotte 49ers defense helped pitch a shutout in their conference opening win over UAB, 3-0. The 49ers did not allow a shot on goal in the 90 minutes of action, the second time this season accomplishing the feat (Aug. 28 vs Wofford).
