BIRMINGHAM – Georgia Southern scored a pair of goals three minutes apart in the 2nd half in its 2-0 victory over UAB on Thursday night at PNC Field.
Meredith Pugh put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 48th minute and Smith Cathey added an insurance goal in the 51st minute.
The teams played even in the 1st half, with neither team able to find the back of the net.
UAB had its best chance to get on the board in the 66th minute when Jolie St Louis’ shot hit woodwork. Abby Graeser had an opportunity in the 77th minute, but her shot was turned aside by GSU keeper Quinn Wilson.
“I thought we looked very good in the 1st half, especially in possession,” said head coach Lisa Mann. “We’ve been working for 16 days through the preseason trying to teach them the entire game model and they implemented large portions of it very, very well, but there’s elements that are just not clicking yet. We will come back in and girls will have a good session tomorrow and Saturday as we prepare for the next game against Alabama.”
The Blazers remain at home to face No. 7 Alabama on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Crimson Tide were 2-0 winners over DePaul earlier tonight.
