Owls Drop Middle Game to Dallas Baptist

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball will look to salvage the three-game series with Dallas Baptist on Sunday after falling by an 11-3 final against the Patriots on Saturday.

THE BEGINNING

The Owls scored first for the second straight day. An opposite field base hit by John Schroeder drove in Jackson Ross in the bottom of the second. For the second straight day though, the response from Dallas Baptist was immediate. The Patriots used six hits in the third inning to bring four runs across.

THE TURNING POINT

An RBI single by Nolan Schanuel in the bottom of the third cut the deficit to 4-2. Jacob Josey retired the first two hitters in the fourth inning before running into more trouble. Two singles and a walk brought first baseman Tom Poole to the plate. Poole drove a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field fence for a back-breaking grand slam.

THE FINISH

Schanuel led off with a solo home run in the sixth, but DBU scored one in the seventh and two in the ninth to further pull away.

QUOTABLE

Head coach John McCormack
“We took the lead in the bottom of the second. Promptly gave it up. Then scratched another one and then gave up another four spot. Disappointing. We’ve got to be better in all phases. Offensively we had some chances, we had 10 hits. Got some guys on bases but couldn’t get the third hit in the inning. We must come ready to play tomorrow.”

THE ARMS

  • Josey departed after four innings with 11 hits and eight runs allowed. He walked one and struck out one.
  • Tyler Murphy held the Patriots scoreless in the fifth and sixth.
  • Dylan Oborne made his first relief appearance of the season and lasted 2.2 innings.
  • Max Martzolf got the last out of the ninth inning.

THE BATS

  • Schanuel finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. He extended his reached-base streak to 31 games.

WHAT’S NEXT
