Freshman Rafael Betancourt recorded a career-high three RBI in Sunday’s 12-9 setback.
ORLANDO (April 2, 2023) – After securing the program’s first series win over UCF in Orlando on Saturday, the University of South Florida aimed for its first-ever American Athletic Conference road sweep on Sunday, but came up short in a 12-9 loss in the finale of a three-game weekend series.
South Florida (12-17, 2-1) sits in a tie for first place in the AAC standings after the opening weekend of league play. UCF moves to 17-11 (1-2) after salvaging the series finale.
A five-run fifth inning for UCF was the difference in the ballgame. USF raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first frame only to see the Knights knot the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning. After the Bulls went back in front, 6-3, in the top of the fifth, the Knights took their first lead of the three-game series in the bottom of the inning and never relinquished it.
Rafael Betancourt (Deltona), Travis Sankovich (Uniontown, Pa.) and Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) each had run-scoring hits with two outs in the top of the first inning.
A UCF three-run homer tied the score in the bottom of the third. Betancourt drove in two more runs as part of USF’s three-run fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights batted around and put five runs on the board against the USF bullpen for an 8-6 lead.
Trailing 9-6 after six innings, the Bulls closed the gap to 9-8, including an RBI-single by Marcus Brodil (Dunedin), but ultimately left the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.
The Knights tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh before Daniel Cantu’s (Jacksonville) solo homer in the top of the eighth accounted for the final tally of the ballgame.
