WICHITA, KS, March 31, 2023 – The University of South Florida softball team (22-16, 3-1 AAC) dropped the series opener to the Wichita State Shockers (28-7, 3-1 AAC) on Friday night with a final score of 8-3.
After Wichita State struck first in the first inning, South Florida answered in the top of the second. Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) hit her 10th double of the season and was brought home on a double from Hallie Bryant (Trenton).
The Bulls added to their lead in the following inning with another double, this one from Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel). Megan Pierro (Lutz) walked for the 10th time this season. Pierro and Kadlub advanced a base on a Shocker wild pitch. Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) hit a two-RBI single to clear the bases.
Wichita State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning. They cleared the bases with a double and took the 4-3 lead. They added four more runs in the sixth inning off three home runs.
Gabriella Nori (Weston) pitched 4.1 innings and retired six Shockers while only allowing one walk. Lexie Kopko (Stewartstown, Pa.) pitched 1.1 innings. She struck out two. Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers) relieved Kopko to get the last out of the sixth inning.
NOTABLES
- Sheehan had two of the Bulls RBI. Her season total is now 12.
- The Bulls walked more times than they were struck out.
- As a staff, South Florida’s pitchers struck out eight and only walked two.
