Talitha Diggs receives National Athlete of the Week honors from the USTFCCCA
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After shattering the American record in the indoor 400m on Saturday at the SEC Indoor Championships, Florida junior Talitha Diggs was named Women’s National Co-Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Diggs received the honor after her historic performance at the SEC Indoor Championships. On Saturday she competed in the finals of the women’s 400m, winning gold with a time of 50.15 and breaking the American record by 0.18 seconds. Diggs performance broke the previous record time which was set earlier in the day at the Big 12 Indoor Championships by Rhasidat Adeleke. Prior to Adeleke, Kendall Ellis (50.34) was the record holder, having set it in 2018.
The American record was not all that fell on Saturday as Diggs also broke the Randal Tyson Track Center facility record, the SEC Indoor Championships record, and the school record which stood for 18 years after being set by Tiandra Ponteen in 2005 (50.91).
Diggs also competed in the women’s 200m final finishing seventh with a time of 23.31.
Diggs and the Gators are scheduled to take part in the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 10 and 11 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
