BOCA RATON, Fla. – Destinee McGhee scored a career-high 22 points in 16 minutes, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and Margaret Whitley added 22 of her own, but a 4th quarter run propelled FAU to an 80-75 victory over UAB on Thursday night at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
Maria Roters was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers who fell to 10-11, 2-10 C-USA.
Aniya Hubbard led all scorers with 28 points for the Owls, who improved to 12-9, 5-7 C-USA.
The Blazers led for 15 minutes of the first half. Their largest lead came at the 7:02 mark of the 2nd quarter when Whitley’s 3-pointer made the score 21-14. However, the Owls scored the next eight points to take a 22-21 lead. Whitley answered with her third 3-pointer of the half giving UAB the lead again. They teams would exchange a pair of layups – both by McGhee – to send the game into halftime with the Blazers ahead 28-26.
The 3rd quarter featured three ties and nine lead changes, with the largest advantage being a four-point UAB edge at the start of the quarter and at the 5:42 mark. Lyndsey Robson’s layup deadlocked the game at 50-50 heading into the 4th quarter.
With UAB leading 53-52 at 9:35 of the 4th quarter, the Owls went on a 13-0 run to take a 65-53 lead with 5:59 remaining. The Blazers countered with an 11-2 run to make the score 67-64 at 2:59. However, FAU kept UAB at arm’s length hitting six free throws in the final 60 seconds.
UAB remains in Florida to take on FIU on Feb.4. The next home game is Feb. 9 against North Texas. This is UAB’s Education Day. Tip time is 11 a.m.
