SAN ANTONIO – UTSA’s Jordyn Jenkins’ 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds remaining broke a tie game and gave the Roadrunners a 71-68 victory over the UAB women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
Denim DeShields tied her career-high with 25 points and recorded six assists. Destinee McGhee added a season-high 11 points and Tracey Bershers 10. Maddie Walsh grabbed a career-high nine rebounds for the Blazers who fell to 8-4, 0-3 C-USA.
Sidney Love led UTSA (3-8, 1-1 C-USA) with 23 points.
The first half see-sawed back-and-forth. Love’s 3-pointer with 2:26 left in the second half was the final points scored for either team as they went into halftime deadlocked at 29-29.
With UAB ahead 44-43 at the midway point of the 3rd quarter, they went on a 9-0 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 10 points, 53-43. DeShields finished the quarter with 11 points, making 4-of-6 from the field.
However, UTSA outscored the Blazers 25-15 in the final stanza. UAB had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Love blocked a Lyndsey Robson attempt from the arc.
The contest, which, featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes, saw the Roadrunners outrebound UAB 53-35. Twenty-one of those rebounds came on the offensive side for UTSA.
Up next, the Blazers return home on Jan. 5 to take on Florida Atlantic and follow with FIU on Jan. 7.
