BIMINI, Bahamas – Denim DeShields‘ career-high 25 points led the UAB women’s basketball team to an 83-74 victory over George Mason in the first game of the Goombay Splash.
Margaret Whitley scored 14 points and Lyndsey Robson and Tracey Bershers added 11 points each in the victory.
The Blazers (4-0) led for over 33 minutes in the victory which saw them shoot a season-high 50.9%.
Jazmyn Doster scored 25 points for the Patriots (3-4), whose three-game winning streak came to an end.
The 1st quarter had seven lead changes with the last coming on a Desiree Ware foul shot that made the score 16-15 in favor of UAB.
The teams exchanged layups to start the 2nd quarter before an 11-0 UAB run put them up 27-17 at the midway point. The Blazers would lead 35-28 going into halftime.
Mason would score the first six points of the 3rd quarter to make the score 35-34. However, the run was short-lived as UAB took a double-digit lead heading into the 4th quarter at 60-50.
Another 11-0 run gave the Blazers their largest lead of the game, 18 points at 71-53, at the 7:11 mark of the 4th quarter.
UAB has one more game in Bimini against #12/13 LSU (6-0) on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CST) / 2 p.m. (EST). The Tigers defeated Mason 80-52 on Thursday.

- UAB made a season-high 14 3-pointers, knocking down 51.9% of those.
