BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a convincing 85-53 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Monday afternoon.
Lyndsey Robson and Desiree Ware each scored 12 points and Margaret Whitley added 11 for the Blazers (1-0).
Allasha Dudley led UAM with 12 points.
The Blazers, who led from start-to-finish, jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the 1st quarter sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers by Robson. UAB shot 52.9% (9-for-17) in the opening quarter, including 50% (5-for-10) from 3-point range, as they took a 28-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Maddie Walsh gave the Blazers their first 20-point lead at 30-10 when she opened up the 2nd quarter scoring with a basket. Ashton Elley closed the 2nd quarter out with back-to-back 3-pointers that made the score 50-23 heading into halftime.
Kylee Schneringer’s 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter capped a 12-2 run to give UAB its first 30-point advantage at 74-43.
The lead would get a high as 32 points on an Emily Klaczek free throw with 28 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter.
“This is a great way to get the season started,” said head coach Randy Norton. “We came out with high energy, great focus and guarded extremely well.”
UAB remains at home to take on Nicholls Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. The Colonels’ season opener is Nov. 10 against Mobile. They play Alabama A&M on Nov. 13 before coming to Bartow.
