First Lady Casey DeSantis Assists National Guardsmen and First Responders with Food and Water Delivery to Pine Island

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Today, First Lady Casey DeSantis joined Florida National Guardsmen and first responders for a food and water delivery to Floridians on Pine Island. Pine Island’s access was fully cut off during Hurricane Ian, and the State of Florida is focused on deploying resources to make sure all immediate needs are met as access to the island is restored.

“Our Florida National Guardsmen and first responders have heroically stepped up to serve the needs of those impacted by Hurricane Ian,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “While we are working to restore ground transportation and utilities, the National Guard and first responders have supported the community every step of the way. The Governor and I are grateful for their service.”

On Sunday, Governor Ron DeSantis directed FDOT to assist Lee County to expedite emergency repairs to the road and bridges that provide motorists access to Pine Island. FDOT began mobilizing equipment, materials, and crews. Access to Pine Island is scheduled to be restored by Saturday, October 8, 2022. These repairs are needed for first responders and residents to access the island, as well as other recovery efforts such as power restoration and debris removal.

Once immediate recovery efforts have subsided, permanent repairs will subsequently be constructed. While the permanent replacement is expected to take some time to complete, the temporary road and bridges will be a safe short-term option for immediate access.

The Florida Disaster Fund is providing support for Hurricane Ian recovery to Pine Island and communities impacted across the state. The Florida Disaster Fund is the State of Florida’s official private fund established to provide financial assistance to our communities as they respond to and recover from times of emergency or disaster. In partnership with public, private, and other non-governmental organizations, the Florida Disaster Fund supports response and recovery activities. Over $26 million has already been raised and is being distributed to those directly impacted and in need of immediate assistance.
