FORT Myers, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team suffered a late goal in the 88th minute in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. The Owls record now stands at 2-2-2, while the Eagles improved to 2-3.
TIGHT MATCH DECIDED LATE
It appeared as if the game was heading into a draw with under two minutes remaining. Grace Paradis of Florida Gulf Coast netted the game-winner for the Eagles.
Despite the defeat, the Owls controlled the pace of the game with a 13-8 advantage in shots. A couple of prime opportunities came from Bri Austin. In the 28th minute, Austin took a nice pass from Mia Sennes 10 yards out. After a turn, Austin fired a shot that sailed just to the right of the goal post.
Austin had another good look in the 85th minute with a left-footed shot, but again was just outside of the post. She led the Owls with six shots on the afternoon.
NOTABLES
Thelma Hermannsdottir and Morgan McDonald each got off two shots. Playing the full 90 minutes were Amanda Martin, Jodi Smith and goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez. Gonzalez registered a pair of saves in the game.
NEXT UP
The Owls will hit the road this week for a pair of matches in Tennessee with Memphis and UT Martin on the dockett on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10.
