Game will resume on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. with Daytona leading, 2-1; Seven-inning nightcap to follow
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Due to lightning and the threat of more inclement weather throughout the rest of the night, the Daytona Tortugas’ contest against the Lakeland Flying Tigers was suspended after three and a half innings on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
As a result, both teams will resume Friday’s contest on Saturday, August 13, with the first pitch of the resumed, nine-inning game one slated for 5:05 p.m. ET. The Tortugas will be at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning, holding a 2-1 lead. There will be a roughly 35-minute break in between the two games with a seven-frame nightcap set to follow.
The gates are set to open at 4 p.m., one hour before the first pitch. Fans with tickets to Friday’s suspended game may redeem them at the Tortugas’ box office for any ticket (of equal or lesser value) to a Tortugas home game throughout the remainder of the 2022 regular season. Prior to Mother Nature interrupting the contest, both teams dented the scoreboard in the first inning. Leading off the game, 2B Cristian Santana (1-1, R, HR, RBI, BB) smashed the first pitch of the contest off the videoboard in left-center for a solo home run. The 18-year-old’s sixth blast of the season put the Flying Tigers (18-19, 50-53) in front, 1-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Daytona (11-26, 40-62) responded with a rally of their own. SS Edwin Arroyo (1-2, R, 2B) doubled into the left-field corner to lead off the home first and advanced to third on a balk. After a ground out, CF Jay Allen II (1-2, R, RBI, SO) struck a grounder back through the middle and into center field, scoring Arroyo, to tie the contest at one.
With two out in the inning, 1B Yassel Pino (2-2, RBI) lofted a high fly ball into left-center field. In the grey sky, Lakeland could not find the ball and it landed safely on the turf. Allen scored, while Pino hustled into second with a double, giving the Tortugas a 2-1 advantage.
Tortugas RHP José Franco (2.1 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) reached the 100-strikeout plateau for the season in the first before departing with an apparent injury in the third.
LHP Jake Miller (2.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) went two innings for the Flying Tigers in his professional debut.
