BIRMINGHAM – UAB women’s basketball head coach Randy Norton has released the Blazers’ 2022-23 schedule. The 29-game slate features 15 regular-season home games at Bartow Arena, 20 Conference USA matchups and a two-game tournament in the Bahamas.
The Blazers host Shorter on Nov. 2 in an exhibition game. Last season, UAB opened the regular season with a 76-45 victory over the Hawks.
“Our nonconference schedule will be challenging and will give us an opportunity blend our seven new players with our eight returning,” said Norton. “We are excited to be playing in the Goombay Splash against some of the top teams in the country. In addition to the challenges we’ll face, these nine games will give us good preparation for the Conference USA schedule.”
In the season opener, the Blazers will host Auburn-Montgomery on Nov. 7. This marks the first time since 1988 UAB and UAM have faced each other. The Blazers remain at home to host Nicholls State on Nov. 15.
The first road contest is Nov. 21 at Valparaiso. The Blazers and the Beacons are meeting for the first time since 1989.
UAB hits the Caribbean for a pair of games in the Goombay Splash held in Bimini, Bahamas on Nov. 25 and 26. The Blazers will play two games, taking on George Mason and LSU. UAB and GMU have not met since 2013. LSU coming off a 26-6 season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season. This will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools and the first SEC opponent since the 2019 WNIT when UAB faced Arkansas.
The Blazers make their first-ever road trip to Cullowhee, N.C. when they play Western Carolina on Dec. 3. The teams have not played each other since 1997.
Miles College comes to Bartow for the second consecutive year on Dec. 13. Last season, the Blazers defeated the Bears 72-52. On Dec. 17, UAB hosts Mississippi Valley State. The Blazers defeated the Lady Devils 76-62 last year.
Conference USA play begins on Dec. 19 when UAB travels to defending reigning champion Charlotte. The Blazers and 49ers did not meet last season.
Nonconference play concludes on Dec. 21 when UAB hosts Alcorn State.
The 2022 calendar year will close out in Texas. The Blazers are at UTEP on Dec. 29 and at UTSA on Dec.31.
The home slate of conference play begins Jan. 5 against Florida Atlantic and continues on Jan. 7 versus FIU.
UAB travels to WKU on Jan. 11 before a pair of games at Bartow against LA Tech on Jan. 14 and Middle Tennessee on Jan. 16.
Four of the next five contests are on the road beginning Jan. 21 at North Texas and continuing Jan. 26 at LA Tech. The Blazers return home on Jan. 28 against Rice, then head to the Sunshine State to play against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 2 and FIU on Feb. 4.
North Texas comes to Bartow on Feb. 9 before UAB heads to Middle Tennessee on Feb. 11.
UTEP and UTSA visit Birmingham on Feb. 16 and Feb. 18, respectively.
The final road contest is at Rice on Feb. 23. The regular season wraps up at Bartow with WKU on Feb. 25 and Charlotte on March 4.
“With this being our last year in C-USA, we are excited to be playing every team home and away, providing a true champion for the regular season,” added Norton.
The 2023 Conference USA Championship will be held March 8-11 at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
