Get ready! Championship golf has returned to the famed Detroit Golf Club as we host the annual Rocket Mortgage Classic in the city’s Palmer Park area, July 28-31. A purse of $8.4 million is up for grabs.
Some of the biggest names in PGA Tour golf have committed to participate: defending RMC champion Cam Davis, Keegan Bradley, Patrick Cantlay, Stewart Cink, Jason Day, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler (always a fan favorite), Max Homa, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Michigan’s Brian Stuard, Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris. The field features 156 golfers.
“We are excited. Such an accomplished group of players joining us in Detroit this summer,” said Jason Langwell, executive director of the tournament. “Having golfers of this caliber to play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic speaks to the momentum that we are building and the desire of top players to be part of our event.”
Missing from Detroit and future PGA Tour events are those who signed on with the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV tour. These include Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau who played the Rocket Mortgage Classic in previous years.
For those who cannot see the RMC in person, the Golf Channel has 3-6 p.m. Thursday-Friday coverage and CBS/62 3-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Sirius XM broadcasts all four days too. Tickets are $60 and up and available at RocketMortgageClassic.com.
On Sunday, July 24, complimentary admission at Detroit Golf Club is available for the final round of the John Shippen National Golf Invitational. One female and a male golfer will advance to the Rocket Mortgage Classic from this John Shippen event.
Detroit Community Days presented by DTE Energy are July 26-27 with free admission and free parking. The annual Area 313 Celebrity Scramble presented by Total Health Care Foundation is Tuesday and features Barry Sanders, Lions Hall of Famer, Tom Izzo, MSU Spartans Hall of Famer, Dylan Larkin, Red Wings all-star captain, Calvin Johnson, Lions Hall of Famer, Maurice Allen, former No.1-ranked world long drive contender, singer Kelley James, six PGA Tour and three LPGA Tour golfers, plus four past and present John Shippen event golfers.
Six four-player teams challenge each other in a three-hole exhibition match over holes 14-16 at Detroit Golf Club. There’s also a youth golf clinic presented by The Children’s Foundation from 2-3 p.m. on July 26 at the club’s driving range.
On Wednesday, July 27 you can catch the Delta Dental Pro-Am at Detroit Golf Club featuring many of the RMC professionals teamed with amateurs and the general public. It’s important to note that since 2019, The Rocket Mortgage Classic has invested in more than $5.25 million into nonprofit organizations, including $3.2 million through the Changing the Course initiative launched in 2020.
Michigan can be very proud to host this PGA Tour stop. The state also had two 2022 LPGA tournaments (in Belmont and Midland), the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship (May 23-29) in Benton Harbor, and The Ally Challenge (August 22-28) in Grand Blanc at Warwick Hills, on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. Certainly the Great Lakes state is beholden to many championship golf courses and these events prove it!
