Improvements to Rickenbacker Causeway

Miami-Dade County, under the leadership of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, took swift action in recent weeks to make immediate safety enhancements on the Rickenbacker Causeway. The goal is to better protect bicyclists and pedestrians, and make the Causeway safer for all users.

In the upcoming weeks, Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), in conjunction with the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) and Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS), will be conducting a short-term pilot program for “peloton” group rides. Input was received from multiple stakeholders in developing the project concept and feedback through implementation, which will be critical to the program’s success.

Beginning on July 12, MDPD officers and motors units will facilitate and monitor four peloton group rides that will occur in the month of July. The County will set up an eastbound and westbound protected lane along the Rickenbacker Causeway from the toll plaza through Calusa Circle which is about 5.5 miles.

In addition, messaging boards will be placed along the causeway advising the public to use caution while operating vehicles during these scheduled morning rides. Miami-Dade County does not expect any significant impacts to local area residents, due to the ride occurring in the early morning when traffic is at low volume.
