Mayor Dean Trantalis and Commissioner Steve Glassman joined the artist Djerlens Chery and community leaders to unveil artwork on four of the CIty’s lifeguard towers along Fort Lauderdale Beach.
“The upgrades undertaken to the City’s lifeguard towers provided a unique opportunity to combine public art and public safety. We have created another iconic element for our world famous beachfront that enhance safety by making the stands more visible to beachgoers,” said Trantalis.
Fort Lauderdale issued a call to Florida artists to create the designs. Fort Lauderdale’s Public Arts and Placemaking Advisory Board chose local artist Chery and his vision for incorporating local wildlife and other elements that make Fort Lauderdale Beach unique.
“DJ Chery is a beloved local artist and teacher, and we are thrilled he is contributing some of his wonderful artwork to display on our lifeguard towers. With the aquatic life and beach experience theme he has selected, DJ has complemented the landscape without detracting from the natural beauty of our beaches,” said Glassman.
