UF MGOLF: Biondi Selected as Member of Team International for Arnold Palmer Cup

Fred Biondi becomes the first Brazilian participate in Arnold Palmer Cup history.

NORMAN, Okla. – Florida golfer Fred Biondi was selected as a member of Team International for the 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup via team ranking qualifying, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Tuesday in conjunction with the Golf Channel.

In his breakout season, he becomes the first-ever Brazilian player to participate and the third straight Gator to compete in the event and 11th all-time joining current teammates Ricky Castillo (2020, 2021), Yuxin Lin (2020, 2021), Joe Pagdin (2021) and head coach J.C. Deacon who coached the International Team last year.

The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the GCAA in 1997. A Ryder Cup-style tournament, the event features the top men’s and women’s collegiate golfers. Co-ed since 2018, it is one of the only events in the sport of golf that features men and women competing side-by-side.

Leading the Gators all spring, Biondi has won two events, including his first collegiate win at the VyStar Gators Invitational. He set the tournament record at 196 (-14) to lead Florida to its third consecutive home title and second straight to start the spring.

He added his second victory in the regular season finale at the Calusa Cup, in a field that featured seven of the top-25 teams in the nation. Biondi also leads the team in stroke average (69.7) and birdies per round (4.2). He has posted three top-5 and four top-10 finishes this season.

A native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, he was named to the spring Haskins Award List and has been the SEC Golfer of the Week twice, Golfweek Player of the Week and his last five outings he has had two first-place finishes, a runner-up, a T7 and a runner-up finish at the Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC).

Biondi was also ranked the No. 1 player in the final March Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings and is currently the No. 3 player by Golfstat and Golfweek.
The top six golfers from the spring’s final ranking from both the United States and International men and women shall be among the individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup. The remaining six spots for the United States will consist of five committee picks, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team also includes five committee selections, including at least one representative from The R&A Student Tour Series, and a coaches pick.

The 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup is set to take place at Golf Club de Geneve in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland from July 1-3.
