U18s Win 3-2 in OT, U22s Win 4-2; Both Series Conclude Saturday (Aug. 17) LAKE PLACID, N.Y.– Both the U.S. Under-18 and Under-22 Women’s Select Teams earned victories here tonight against Canada in the second game for each team of the annual best-of-three series. In the first matchup of the evening, the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team gained a 3-2 win in overtime to even the series at a game apiece, while the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team earned its second win of the series with a 4-2 victory. The event concludes Saturday (Aug. 17) with the U18 Series finale at 4 p.m. ET followed by the U22 Series contest at 7 p.m. Under-18 Series: USA 3, Canada 2 (OT)Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) scored the game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation and the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team past Canada, 3-2, in game two of the 2019 Under-18 Series.“Talk about resiliency,” said Maura Crowell, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. “This was a much tighter game than the first one, but a couple plays were made and we were able to come back in the end. It says a lot about our team.”Team USA outshot Canada 11-3 in the first period, but the game was scoreless after the opening 20 minutes. Canada took a 1-0 advantage heading into the third period, but Danielle Burgen (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) scored her third goal of the series to tie the game just over six minutes into the third off a pass from Peyton Hemp (Andover, Minn.).Maddi Wheeler scored with :49 left to play in the regulation to stake Canada to a 2-1 advantage, but Murphy notched Team USA’s second equalizer of the game with just two seconds left on the clock to force overtime.Just over a minute into the extra session, Murphy found the back of the net again with a slap shot from the top of the circle to secure the victory for Team USA. Under-22 Series: USA 4, Canada 2Hannah Bilka (Coppell, Texas) scored the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in the third period as the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team defeated Canada, 4-2, in game two of the 2019 Under-22 Series.“This was another highly competitive game,” said Joel Johnson, head coach of the U.S. Under-22 Select Team. “Our players came together and worked really hard to get the win in the end. Hopefully we can keep that energy and momentum heading into Saturday’s game.”Canada took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Presley Norby (Minnetonka, Minn.) tipped in a shot from Ally Simpson (Frisco, Texas) to tie the game with less than 10 minutes to play in the second period.Natalie Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead two minutes into the third, but Canada answered less than five minutes later. Grace Zumwinkle (Excelsior, Minn.) had a chance to put the U.S. back in the lead, but was turned away on her breakaway attempt by Canadian goaltender Kelsey Roberts with 14 minutes to go in the third.With less than five minutes to play in the third, Bilka scored the game-winning goal to secure the victory for Team USA and Sydney Brodt (North Oaks, Minn.) tacked on an insurance goal three minutes later.
