Alexis Johns ties the USF single-season stolen bases record while Bulls offense surged against ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C., April 1, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team remained undefeated on the road this season with its first conference victory, a 9-0 victory over East Carolina.

Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) tied the USF single season stolen bases record with her 38th swipe of the season on her second steal of the afternoon. She’s now even with AnaMarie Bruni, who stole 38 bases last season to set the current record.

The Bulls (29-10, 1-3 AAC) took the lead early with Johns reaching and immediately stealing second, advancing to third, then scoring on a Sheehan groundout.

South Florida added four runs to its lead in the second. Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.) was forced home on a Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Haven, Fla.) walk with the bases loaded. In the next at-bat, Johns singled home Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), then Sheehan singled up the middle to push two across the plate.

Johns scored her third run of the day in the fourth, crossing home on a Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) single up the middle to extend USF’s lead to 6-0.

The Bulls tacked on three more in the seventh as Maldonado hit her first home run of the year and second of her career on a three-run shot over the left-field fence.

Erin Poepping (Lino Lakes, Minn.) came in to close out the game in the seventh, forcing a double-play and striking out the last batter to post a 9-0 victory.
