DENTON, Tx. – The FAU softball team saw its six-game winning streak end on Saturday against North Texas. The Mean Green defeated the Owls, 6-3, in the second game of a three-game set.
The winning streak was the Owls’ longest since the 2016 season and the 4-0 Conference USA start was the Owls’ best since the 2016 campaign as well.
The Owls (15-14, 4-1 C-USA) put up a two-spot in the first inning. Kaitlyn Cunningham worked a walk then advanced to third with a Sara Berthiaume double. The next batter, Zoey Jones, drove in Cunningham with an RBI sacrifice fly. Berthiaume advanced to third, then scored on a wild pitch.
North Texas countered with four in the bottom of the first. The Owls drew within one by way of a Cunningham RBI double in the third inning. The FAU center fielder drove one that bounced off the right center field wall to score Cammeo Presutti.
The runs continued to come in, and the Mean Green pushed over two more in the third against FAU starter Gabby Sacco. That 6-3 score held up and wound up as the final.
Donnie Gobourne was effective in the relief, throwing three shutout innings. Gobourne struck out five and only allowed one walk.
Riley Olson went 2-3 at the plate to lead the offensive attack.
On Friday night, FAU locked up head coach Joan Joyce and the Owls’ 1,000th all-time win. Joyce became just the 27th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1,000-win milestone and adds another accomplishment to her legendary career.
The Owls and Mean Green will close out the series with game three tomorrow at 1 p.m. eastern time.
