UF S&D | Gators Claim Pair of First-Place Relay Finishes on Day One of SEC Championships

The Florida men swept the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay to head into day two in sixth place, while the women picked up an NCAA B cut in the 800-free relay and sit in seventh entering Wednesday.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – With day one of the 2022 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in the books, the Florida men and women head into Wednesday in possession of sixth and seventh place, respectively.

The highlight of day one came in the form of a Gators sweep in the men’s 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. In the former, the team of Adam Chaney, Dillon Hillis, Eric Friese and Alberto Mestre took the top spot on the podium with a time of 1:22.06. The Gators paced the field with the nation’s fastest time of the season and set a new SEC meet record.

As for the men’s 800-free relay, Florida once again finished atop the podium while posting the nation’s fastest time as well as a new SEC record. Kieran Smith, Trey Freeman, Oskar Lindholm and Alfonso Mestre combined to complete the event in 6:08.00, topping the previous SEC record of 6:09.14 by more than one-full second.

Moving over to the women’s side, the top performance in the pool came in the 800-free relay with the team of Talia Bates, Ekaterina Nikonova, Micayla Cronk and Nikki Miller. Finishing in fourth with a 7:01.77 mark, the Gators captured an NCAA B cut and improved on their seed time by nearly seven seconds.

In the women’s 200-yard medley relay, Katelyn Mack, Tylor Mathieu, Olivia Peoples and Micayla Cronk placed 10th with a time of 1:37.78.

The Gators had five women competing on the 1-meter springboard, with four scoring points on Tuesday afternoon. Maha Amer posted the highest score, recording a zone qualifying score of 266.80 for a 10th-place finish.

Elettra Neroni followed with a 15th-place finish (237.90), while Carina Lumia (236.90) and Elizabeth Perez (229.85) finished 17th and 19th, respectively to round out the scorers. Lauren Snider posted a 28th-place on the 1-meter, recording a score of 202.80.

On the men’s side, Leonardo Garcia scored the first points of the Championships with a 20th-place finish (290.70), while Anton Svirskyi finished 26th with 259.05 points.
