Riley Hogan has another big week; Jake Sullivan has his team ready for the playoffs
TAMPA, July 29, 2019 – Summer collegiate baseball leagues enter the final week of the regular, as a few USF baseball players look to lead their teams into the postseason.
Summer Ball Bulls
Alex Bello – Danbury Westerners – New England Collegiate Baseball League
Bello played in five games last week, totaling four hits. He went 1-for-4 with a run on July 22, then flexed his muscles on July 25, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and a season high six RBI. He added another hit and a run on Saturday. The Westerners are 18-20 with six games remaining.
Jake Sullivan – Savannah Bananas – Coastal Plain League
Sullivan caught fire over the weekend in two of the three games he played in last week. He went 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI on Friday. He went 2-for-3 with a double, a RBI and two runs on Saturday. Sullivan has 22 RBI and 17 runs this season. The Bananas continue to lead the South Division of the Coastal Plain League and own the second best record in the league with five games remaining in the regular season.
Riley Hogan – Peninsula Pilots – Coastal Plain League
Hogan was hitting .414 since recording his first hit of the summer on June 14 with eight doubles, 24 runs and 27 RBI entering last week. He not only added to those numbers, but increased his average with a monstrous week for the Pilots. Playing in all seven games, Hogan went 15-for-25 (.600) with four doubles, a home run, 11 RBI and eight runs. He had five multi-hit games and has hit safely in 21 of the last 23 games.
Hogan began the week going 2-for-3 with a double and a run to open a doubleheader. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI in the second game. He had three more hits to start a doubleheader on July 24 with a double, a run and a RBI. He followed with a 4-for-4 effort in the second game with a double, a home run, four runs and six RBI. Hogan is batting .394 on the season with 40 RBI and 32 runs. He’s tied for the team lead with 12 doubles and leads the Pilots with the 40 RBI.
Nick Gonzalez – Peninsula Pilots – Coastal Plain League
Gonzalez played in just one game last week after missing the previous five. He had four hits and three RBI on July 20, both season highs. The Pilots are 25-22 with five games remaining.
About USF Baseball
The University of South Florida baseball team is one of the fastest rising programs in the country. The Bulls reached the NCAA Regionals in 2015 for the first time in 13 years and followed that success with a 42-19 record and second NCAA regional trip in three years in 2017. The Bulls continued the success under first-year head coach Billy Mohl in 2018, reaching 36 wins and advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2012, while being ranked in multiple polls for the final two months. USF earned its third NCAA Regional berth in the last four seasons and had six all-conference selections in 2018. The team had four players drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft, including the program’s fourth first rounder, Shane McClanahan. Junior third baseman David Villar was taken in the 11th round after tallying 24 doubles and hitting better than .370, being named first team all-conference and an All-American. The USF Baseball program has won five conference titles and the Bulls have made 13 NCAA appearances.
