No. 6 on the Jaguars All-25, the club announced today. Jaguars All-25 presented by Sharpie is a collection of the top 25 non-active players in franchise history, as voted on by members of the local media. The Jaguars’ silver celebration kicked off in mid-March with the start of the new league year and the unveiling of the team’s 25th season commemorative logo designed to embody the spirit of DUUUVAL.
Brackens, 6-4, 267, was originally selected by Jacksonville in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1996 NFL Draft and played eight seasons for the Jaguars from 1996-2003. He was named to the Pro Bowl following the 1999 season after posting 12.0 sacks and eight forced fumbles. His career totals of 55.0 sacks, 28 forced fumbles and 13 fumble recoveries are all franchise records for the Jaguars. He made at least 7.0 sacks in five (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001) of his nine seasons, and forced at least five fumbles in four (1996, 1997, 1999, 2001) of his nine seasons. Brackens holds the franchise record with eight consecutive games with a sack during the 2001 season.
He played his entire career in Jacksonville, and after announcing his retirement at the age of 29, Brackens told the media, “Mentally and physically, I thought I could probably still do it, but I didn’t want to put up with all the rule changes. All the stuff they’re doing to players takes the fun out of the game. They want people to buy tickets, but the things people like to see that sells tickets, they take it away. I can’t hit anybody or they’ll fine me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for the time I had in the NFL. But I’ve got a new job and I love ranching, the discipline of it. It’s never monotonous. Yesterday, we penned about 80 cows. You have to use angles to corral them. It teaches you athletic stuff. There’s a lot of variables involved.”
Brackens played collegiately at the University of Texas from 1992-95 and was an All-America selection as a senior in 1995 after leading the Longhorns to a 10-1 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. His 24.0 career sacks rank eighth in school history.
“I think he might be the most legitimate game wrecker the Jaguars have ever had on the defensive side of the ball,” said Gene Frenette, columnist for the Florida Times-Union. “If there was one guy that would keep an offensive coordinator not sleeping at night in Jaguars history, he might be my first choice.”
Brackens currently lives on his ranch in Fairfield, Texas, where he and his wife, Candace, are raising three children – Aidan, McKinna and Tristan.
