MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference officials released its Players of the Week ending on November 7, earlier this afternoon. Nova Southeastern had five student-athletes selected with three being recognized for the first time in their careers. Chama Silva (Women’s Soccer), Grace Gilmore (Women’s Basketball), Javier Calles (Men’s Golf), Alberto Ciroi (Men’s Soccer), and Tino Miguez (Men’s Soccer) were the recipients from NSU.
Chama Silva
Silva continued her strong play as of late, leading the Sharks to a 3-2 road win at Rollins to clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SSC Tournament. The sophomore tallied an assist and a goal in span of 5:07 early in the first half, staking NSU to a 2-0 advantage before holding on for the victory. Silva has now scored a goal in three straight matches, totaling eight points during the stretch. Prior to the match, Rollins hadn’t allowed more than two goals in a single game all season.
Grace Gilmore
Making her Sharks debut at the D2CCA Tip-off Classic at the Trailhead, Gilmore made her presence felt in each of the three games for NSU. The graduate transfer earned her first career Sunshine State Defensive Player of the Week award by recording seven steals, a block and six defensive rebounds. NSU went 2-1 on the weekend, defeating Simon Fraser and Minot State. The Sharks play their home opener for the 2021-22 season on Fri., Nov. 12.
Javier Calles
Calles repeats as SSC Men’s Golfer of the Week after leading the Sharks to their second straight team win while also capturing his second consecutive individual victory last Tuesday at the McDonough Cup. Calles opened with a bogey-free round of 7-under 65, but his finish was arguably even more special, as the sophomore closed birdie-birdie, including a chip-in on No. 18 to earn the one-shot win. Calles recorded a combined 11 birdies on the week. NSU (-20) cruised to a 13-stroke win as a team.
Alberto Ciroi
Ciroi spearheaded an NSU defensive performance in which the Sharks blanked Rollins en route to a 1-0 win to lock up the No. 4 seed in the SSC Tournament. The NSU keeper collected three saves in the effort, as the Sharks limited the Tars to just seven shots overall. The shutout marked his fourth solo shutout of the season. NSU enter the postseason with a 5-0-1 record in its previous six matches. The award marks his second of the season.
Tino Miguez
Providing more late-game drama for a Sharks team that’s experienced its fair share this season, Miguez notched the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to push NSU past Rollins in the regular season finale. The victory helped the Sharks lock up the No. 4 seed in the SSC Tournament, securing a home match in the quarterfinal round. The goal marked the second in the past three games for Miguez, as NSU finished 5-0-1 down the stretch.
