Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals has been voted the National League Pitcher of the Month for August, and Robbie Ray of the Toronto Blue Jays has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for August. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.
Wainwright, the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award recipient, earned his third career NL Pitcher of the Month Award, most recently in September 2014, and is St. Louis’ first recipient since Jack Flaherty in September 2019. Ray claimed his first career AL Pitcher of the Month Award and is Toronto’s first winner since Ricky Romero in August 2011.
Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (@UncleCharlie50)
• Across six starts, delivered a 5-1 record with a 1.43 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Allowed 29 hits, one home run and six walks across 44.0 innings pitched.
• Delivered a two-hit complete-game shutout on August 11th against the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming the oldest Cardinals pitcher to throw a shutout of two hits-or-less since Jim Kaat in 1980.
• Recorded three scoreless starts of at least 7.0 innings pitched during his award-winning month, including each of his last two.
• His most recent start on Saturday was the fifth this season in which he tossed at least 7.0 scoreless innings with three hits-or-fewer allowed. That is tied for the 15th-most in a single season in MLB history, and the most by a Major League hurler since both Flaherty and Jacob deGrom accomplished the feat in 2019.
Robbie Ray, Toronto Blue Jays (@robbieray38)
• Made six starts for the Blue Jays while posting a 1.76 ERA. Permitted 27 hits and eight walks while recording 52 strikeouts over 41.0 innings of work.
• During his start on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles, recorded his 1,241st strikeout over his first 1,000 career innings pitched. He surpassed Yu Darvish (1,222) for the Major League record, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
• Has tallied at least 10 punchouts in each of his last three starts dating back to August 20th. He joined Roger Clemens as the only pitchers in franchise history to notch double-
digit strikeouts in three consecutive games.
• The 2017 All-Star has also not permitted more than five hits or a single walk in each of his last three turns in the rotation. That streak is tied for the second-longest in MLB history, trailing only Chris Sale’s streak of four such starts in 2018.
