MIAMI (June 25, 2021) – Inter Miami CF (2W-2D-6L, 8 points) narrowly fell 1-2 to Orlando City SC at DRV PNK Stadium in a tightly-contested affair.
“I feel really proud of the team. I think when you talk about what you want to see from the team, this is exactly what I saw tonight,” said head coach Phil Neville. “I’m absolutely convinced that [if] we keep our attitude, we keep our level of performance, we are heading in the right direction…Life sometimes doesn’t always deal you the cards that you want in terms of fútbol but the results will turn with that kind of attitude and performance level.”
Before the match began, the team held a moment of silence to stand in solidarity with those who are still missing and those who have lost their lives when a building collapsed in Surfside in Miami. In addition, the team wore black armbands to commemorate those affected. In light of yesterday’s tragedy, Inter Miami is donating $10,000 to the Support Surfside Relief Fund. In front of another sellout crowd, Inter Miami hosted “Blackout DRV PNK Stadium” presented by Publix in the match. The first 12,000 fans who arrived at DRV PNK Stadium received a Blackout co-branded Publix and Inter Miami t-shirt to wear during the match. Fans were also invited to Be Part of the Show for Inter Miami’s second full-capacity match by participating in the pre-match and halftime ceremony light show with their cell phones.
Inter Miami opened the match with a familiar starting XI, making two changes from its previous match; Victor Ulloa and Kelvin Leerdam slotted in for the suspended duo of Gregore and Ryan Shawcross. Ulloa also donned the captain’s armband in the match.
It was all Inter Miami in the match’s opening moments as the team pressed with energy from the opening kick. In the second minute, Lewis Morgan won the ball, squared a pass to Jay Chapman in the box, who turned and fired a shot, drawing a diving save.
Inter Miami continued to push in the following moments, creating transition opportunities by winning the ball with aggressive pressing. In the 23rd minute, Christian Makoun won the ball high up the field, knocking the ball to Brek Shea at the top of the box, whose powerful shot went wide.
The hosts continued to threaten for the remainder of the half, notably creating transition opportunities with runs from Morgan and Julián Carranza with Chapman initiating several opportunities with his passing. The match, however, remained scoreless at halftime.
The second half began with a John McCarthy making his first vital save of the match, diving to deny a curling shot from Nani in the 49th minute.
Inter Miami made a pair of changes in the 61st minute, bringing on Rodolfo Pizarro and Gonzalo Higuaín for Shea and Carranza respectively. The changes quickly proved fruitful, with Higuaín opening the scoring in the 67th minute; Higuain cut in from the left, drove past defenders and fired a powerful shot from long range into the bottom corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Higuaín’s fifth of the season, the most on the team, while the assist was Chapman’s first of the campaign.
Orlando, however, responded in the 73rd minute; Nani delivered a cross from the right wing that Chris Mueller met in the box, who volleyed it into the back of the net to equalize. The visitors then took the lead in the 80th minute, with Nani firing a curling shot from the left corner of the box into the top right corner of the net to make it 1-2.
The result held for the final ten minutes of the match, with Inter Miami narrowly falling 1-2 to Orlando City. The team will be back in action next Saturday, when Inter Miami visits CF Montréal at Red Bull Arena for a 7:30 p.m. ET kick off.

CRÓNICA: Inter Miami CF cae 1-2 contra Orlando City SC
MIAMI (25 de junio de 2021) – Inter Miami CF (2V-2D-6E, 8 puntos) cayó 1-2 en un partido reñido ante Orlando City SC en el DRV PNK Stadium.
“Me siento muy orgulloso del equipo. Pienso que cuando hablan de lo que quieren ver del equipo, eso es exactamente lo que se vio esta noche”, dijo el director técnico Phil Neville. “Estoy convencido que si seguimos con nuestra actitud, mantenemos el nivel de nuestras actuaciones vamos en la dirección correcta… La vida no siempre juega a tu favor en términos de fútbol, pero los resultados van a cambiar con esa actitud y el nivel de las actuaciones”.
