BIRMINGHAM –UAB picked up its first win over a ranked opponent since 2016 with a 1-0 decision in extra minutes over No. 18 Kentucky on Saturday evening at BBVA Field.
“I am extremely proud of the group,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “They kept grinding the entire match and made the game very difficult for Kentucky. I thought they did a great job sticking with the game plan and finding a way to win. Congratulations to Brooks Rice for a great goal at the right time.”
The Blazers played extremely tight defense throughout the match that led to a tie at zero through 90 minutes. UAB’s lone goal was the only one they needed. In overtime, Brooks Rice found the back of the net from Cale Loughrey’s assist in the 98thminute to get the golden goal.
The Blazers improve to 3-9-1 overall, 1-2-1 in Conference USA play. UAB will be on the road for a conference match against South Carolina on April 2 at 1 p.m.
