KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Neil Strauber, Florida Atlantic University men’s soccer’s starting goalkeeper, was tabbed the United Soccer Coaches Player of the Week, as announced by the organization Tuesday. Strauber is the first Owl in program history to earn the weekly award.
The Owls earned a huge three points on the road last Sunday with a 1-0 win at Old Dominion to hand the Monarchs their first loss of the season. Strauber was instrumental in the feat to pick up his fourth clean sheet of the season, while matching a season-high six saves for a perfect 1.000 save percentage. His effort in the net helped the Owls take down the Monarchs for the second consecutive season and just the second time in school history.
Strauber has started in all eight games in net to total 760 minutes. The Tel Aviv, Israel native has posted a 4-2-2 record, a 0.83 goals against average and 25 saves for a .781 save percentage. His four shutouts leads the conference and puts him at 11th nationally. Strauber also posts the fourth most shutouts in a season in program history.
Strauber earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week last month, and is now the first Owl to receive a national award from the United Soccer Coaches. The last time an Owl was recognized for a weekly award outside of the conference office was in 2005 when Anders Granstad was tabbed Soccer FLA.com Player of the Week.
Every Tuesday during the regular season, United Soccer Coaches names a men’s and women’s Player of the Week for NCAA Division I, II and III and junior college based on nominations from schools and conferences. Strauber is one of three, only DI men’s player, to be recognized for this weekly award.
The Owls have a huge C-USA match on their plate, as they take on South Carolina on Saturday at noon. Admission is free, but offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. All game days and times are subject to change.
