BOCA RATON, Fla. – On Saturday, the Florida Atlantic University football team took to the field for an offense versus defense controlled scrimmage. If you closed your eyes and just listened to the sounds, you would have thought the defense prevailed, however, with sight added to the mix, the scoreboard read 66-48 offense. Regardless, it was just nice to hear and see, in March, as the Owls begin preparation for 2021 season.
HIGHLIGHTS
Here are a few, not all of the bigger plays in today’s scrimmage
- Kelvin Dean Jr. fought through crowds to score multiple times
- Willie Taggart Jr. drove the offense to the goal line, but the defense prevented a score
- Caliph Brice and Jordan Helm made the read to tag a rusher for a loss of yards and prevent a score
- Running backs Tyrek Tisdale, Daniel Leconte and James Charles found the end zone, as did Taggart
- Javion Posey connected with Johnny Ford 10 yards downfield, with the speedy running back using his feet for another 30 yards. He scored later on 4th-and-long
- The defense recorded a safety
- Newcomer Michael Johnson Jr. found Jordan Merrell dancing down the sideline
- Linebacker Jarrett Jerrels picked up a fumble and returned it 40 yards, and he was only stopped from scoring by Johnson, just beyond midfield
SPEED ZONE
Something new to the Owls’ practice is announcing players to break 20 mph. Players wear a vest, that among other things, measures their speeds throughout the day. The moment a player hits the speed of 20 mph, a horn sounds and the strength coaches drop and do a regiment of pushups. No one was caught speeding during Saturday’s scrimmage.
