LIONS INTERIM HEAD COACH DARRELL BEVELL CONFERENCE CALL QUOTE SHEET (VIA ZOOM)

December 11, 2020

Opening Statement: “Hope you guys are doing well. Can’t believe you aren’t bored of me yet – every single day! But whatever you got, let’s see it, let’s hear it.”
On if RB D’Andre Swift will be available for Sunday if he practices again today: “Again, (he) had another good day yesterday. So as I’ve told you, it’s a day-to-day thing in terms of – they have to make it through, they have to come in today, and they have to feel good today, and then one more practice. I would say he’s trending in the right direction, yes.”
On adjusting coverages based on how well-protected Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has been this season: “Well just playing Aaron Rodgers makes you adjust to everything. He’s just playing at such a high level right now. He does an outstanding job of understanding, diagnosing what you’re presenting him, and then he gets the ball out as quick as anybody. So he’s a hard guy to get to, so you have to change things up, you have to try to mix it up for him, to make it as hard as you can on him. But like I said, he’s about as good as they come at diagnosing all that.”
On if the chances of WR Kenny Golladay playing on Sunday are minimal: “Well if he could go today and show us, then I would be good with him playing. But again, the thing is – it’s important (to know) that he would be in a certain role. There’s a ramping up period to make sure that these guys aren’t going to injure something else, with all of a sudden going from zero to 60. We’ll see what happens today, see if we can get him out there today, and then we’ll kind of go from there.”
On if he anticipates WR Kenny Golladay practicing today: “There’s a chance. I talked to them last night. I haven’t talked to him this morning since everybody’s gotten in the building, but I’ll communicate with Dave (Granito, head athletic trainer) downstairs, after this actually, and we’ll see what happens this afternoon.”
On if Packers TE Isaac Nauta’s knowledge of the Lions is problematic: “Yeah, it’s definitely a concern. It’s something that we think about all the time, and all of us are pretty secretive about what we’re doing. Nowadays, with the TV cameras and the microphones everywhere, there’s always some of that going on anyways, just changing things up. But definitely when a player goes to an opponent that you’re playing that week, it’s something we have to definitely take into consideration, yes.”
On if the team was able to confirm if RB D’Andre Swift had a concussion or if he was dealing with migraines: “Yes, I think it’s safe to say there is a fine line there. I don’t think it’s for me to be able to comment on his health to the public. But yes, there is a fine line and things there that we were looking at, yes.”
On if RB D’Andre Swift had a concussion: “I cannot say that.”
On the balance of the team staying focused amid all the uncertainty and unknown: “It’s super important. All of us are playing for our jobs, really, every week, every game. I don’t think it’s something that becomes a distraction. I always worry about us overtrying and trying to get outside of what we’re doing to make a play. That’s why the focus is really on – it’s always about us. It’s about how we play. The football field has not changed dimensions. The football hasn’t changed dimensions. The game that they’ve been playing since they were 8 years old hasn’t changed at all. It’s just go out there and play, play fast, play free. I think that can be a really freeing experience where you get out of your own head, you just go play a game that you love to play, and you play it at a high level and not worry about those types of things.”
On what he thinks of the nucleus here and what it means for the future: “I know for sure that we have a bunch of great guys in that room. First of all, great men in terms of who they are as people and human beings basically not being attributed to the Lions, but just as people, which I appreciate first and foremost. They’re good guys, they’re guys that I would want to hang out with outside of this building. But then in the building, I think it’s very important to them. We’ve got a lot of players that love this game. We’ve got a lot of players that do love the Lions and love playing for that logo, as well as their name.”
