UAB Men’s Soccer Travels to Statesboro for Matchup with Georgia Southern

BIRMIMGHAM – Coming off a win over Central Arkansas last Saturday, the UAB men’s soccer team looks to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2014 as they travel to Statesboro, Ga. to face Georgia Southern Saturday night.

UAB (1-0) started off the season with a 3-2 overtime win against a strong Central Arkansas team thanks to a brace from senior Joseph Buete including the game-winning goal in overtime. Buete’s performance earned him a spot on TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week. The Blazers also picked up a goal from senior Aodhán O’Hara, who drew a foul inside the box before burying the ensuing penalty kick.

Georgia Southern (0-2) already has two games under its belt in 2020 with an opening weekend loss to UAB’s Conference USA foe South Carolina on Saturday before falling to Mercer Tuesday night.

The Eagles fell to South Carolina 2-0 in Columbia after being outshot 15-6 on the evening. Georgia Southern failed to earn a corner kick in the match while the Gamecocks totaled nine. In their 3-0 loss to Mercer, the Eagles were outshot 23-3 and did not register a shot in the entire second half. Dating back to last season, the Eagles have now been shut out in four consecutive games.

“Georgia Southern is a well-coached team that we have had some really good matches against in recent years,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “Without another DI opponent in our state, we tend to form rivalries with teams in Georgia and as is the case in many of those games, no matter what kind of year either team is having, it’s always going to be a tough match up. We are looking to build off our performance from last week and really focusing on creating more chances on goal. Again, we are just excited to be playing.”

Game time is slated for 6 p.m. CST in Statesboro and is available to stream through ESPN+.
