BIRMINGHAM – Senior midfielder Joseph Buete has been named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Men’s Team of the Week as announced by the publication Tuesday morning.
Buete tallied his first career brace in UAB’s 3-2 overtime win against Central Arkansas, including the game-winning goal in the 95th minute of extra time. The Wake Forest, N.C. native was incredibly efficient recording two shots in the match, resulting in two goals.
“Joe really stepped up when we needed him last week,” said head coach Jeff Kinney. “We’ve been focusing on getting him to push the ball forward into the box a bit more and he delivered with both his runs and finishes. He deserved those goals and the accolades that came with them.”
The first goal from Buete came just eight minutes into action as he found the back of the net off a ball from Santiago Herrera. His second goal, the game winner, came off a pass from Tyrell Price which Buete snuck just past the goalkeeper in the bottom right corner of the goal.
Buete picked up four points in the match and has already tied his goal total from a season ago. In 2019 he was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for his performance in the classroom and on the pitch. He also earned C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was awarded the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal for owning a 3.75 GPA or higher.
The Blazers are back in action this Saturday, Sept. 26 as they travel to Georgia Southern for a 6 p.m. contest against the Eagles. Continue to check UABSports.com for updates and information on the 2020 fall schedule as dates and times are subject to change.
