“ME” Monday® 8-3-2020 Asking for help.
When we’re recovering from an injury or illness, who DO we ask for help?
Though it may sometimes feel like we ‘have-to’ do everything for ourselves without help, there are times we should allow, even ASK, others for assistance.
What is it about asking others for help that might make us feel uncomfortable?
Last week we thought a bit about what our older self might ask us to do differently as our younger selves. As our present selves, how might we better care for ourselves now by accepting help from someone else?
As we get older, we expect various signs of aging to become evident and we go along with it as it happens. We may say something like, ‘getting older stinks’; what adjustments might we make, or do we do just accept it?
Well, my older self asked me to do something about those signs of aging now, so I reached out to my regenerative doctor and scheduled a procedure that took place last week. The process was very successful; I am recovering quickly and well. What I wasn’t prepared for was to have to ask for aid during the immediate few days post-procedure! Many family and friends reached out to see how I was feeling. It was hilarious to say “I’m feeling well, I just wish I didn’t have to ask for help!” Isn’t the most important thing that I’m healing well and taking care of my health?
So, hmmm… what might we need to do differently so it feels more comfortable to ask others to do things for us as we do for them?
Simple examples:
• If we need to get something that is on a top shelf that we can’t reach, do we ask for help or do we find a way to climb up and get it?
• If there are deadlines for a project at work, do we ask for help to make sure it gets done, or try to do it all on our own for fear someone will think we can’t handle the job alone?
What would it feel like if we practice thinking of small things that we can ask someone to help us with? How might we feel when we do?
How would it feel to ask for support when we are planning “ME” time on “ME” Monday®?
You know, I’m still recovering and have to take it easy so I’m asking for help preparing meals. That gives me some “ME” time to rest on “ME” Monday®!
