Looking for a series win to start the 2020 season, the Marlins sent lefty Caleb Smith to the mound against the Phillies. Smith battled through the first, stranding a pair of walks and striking out two. Philadelphia’s Didi Gregorius led off the second with a home run , but Smith battled through a seven-hitter inning without allowing further damage. He finished the third inning in three hitters, but having tied his career-high with six walks, Smith’s day ended after three. The long ball helped the Phillies extend their lead late, as Phil Gosselin homered in the sixth, JT Realmuto homered in the seventh, and then Gosselin put the game out of reach with his second blast in the eighth inning of a 7-1 Marlins loss.
