Eight Gators have been named to award watch lists this preseason.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 2020 Gators Preseason Watch List keeps growing, as two more players were named to two separate national preseason watch lists on Thursday. Senior Kadarius Toney was named to the 2020 Paul Hornung Award Watch List for the second consecutive year, while tight end Dante Lang received consideration for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy.
Toney, who appeared in seven games and missed six due to injury in 2019, recorded 59 rushing yards on 12 carries (4.9 avg.), caught 10 passes for 194 yards (19.4 avg.) and returned for 33 yards on special teams, finishing his junior campaign with a total 286 all-purpose yards and one touchdown.
A versatile weapon on Florida’s offense and a contributor on special teams, Toney often takes snaps at wide receiver, running back and at quarterback as the team’s wildcat QB.
The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse annually recognizes the most versatile player in major college football. This year’s Paul Hornung Award winner will be honored during the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner, set to take place in Louisville, Kentucky, next March.
Meanwhile, Lang is among 114 players nationwide to be considered for the Wuerffel Trophy.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and Gator Great Danny Wuerffel. The award honors college football players who serve others, while celebrating their positive impact on society and inspiring greater service in the world.
Lang logged a total of 43 community service hours during the 2019-2020 school year, volunteering at several elementary schools in the Gainesville area where he mentored students, encouraged them to make good decisions, talked to them about the importance of staying in school and shed a light on what it means to be a student-athlete.
Lang was also named the 2020 Male Goodwill Gator of the Year this past summer by the University Athletic Association, a recognition given to the student-athlete who has had the most positive impact on the community.
Semifinalists for the Wuerffel Trophy will be announced on Nov. 3, and finalists will be named on Nov. 23. The official announcement of the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s festivities in New York City on Dec. 8, and the award will be presented on Feb. 19, 2021 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
