1 Leaves, 1 Stays, And The Lions Add 2 To The Coaching Staff
By: Jeremy T. Ballreich
Well the 2023 Coaching carousel has begun with a whirlwind of action the last couple of weeks. New HCs in Carolina (Frank Reich), Denver (Sean Peyton), and Houston (DaMeco Ryans). Ben Johnson was the front runner for the Carolina Panthers HC position. But he elected to stay on as the Offensive Coordinator for the Lions, and they rewarded him with a nice contract for it.
Duce Staley, he’s being reunited with Frank Reich, who was the QB coach while Staley was the RB coach in Philadelphia with the Super Bowl run that year. It also helps Duce out personally, it’s a promotion to Offensive Coordinator, plus he’s closer to Florida to visit his ailing mother more. I wish him nothing but the best.
The Lions last week added Steven Heiden who was formerly with the Arizona Cardinals as their TE coach and Assistant HC. He takes on that same role here in Detroit.
Dre Bly, 11 year NFL Veteran and former Detroit Lion himself is the new Corner Backs Coach. He couldn’t be happier with being ‘back home’ to help the Lions develop their defensive backfield. Also thanked Shelia Hamp for the opportunity.
Two days ago, the Lions replaced Duce Staley with Stevie Montgomery, formerly with the Colts as their RB Coach. He will be assuming the same role here in Detroit. Hopefully, he can build the chemistry in the RB Room like Duce did.
All in all, on paper it looks like they still have a great coaching staff here in the Motor City.
Playoffs or bust in 2023!
