WTEN: Miami Falls Short to Florida State, 4-3

TALLAHASEE, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team (8-6, 3-2 ACC) fell 4-3 to the Florida State Seminoles (11-4, 2-3) on Wednesday evening at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes fell short in doubles and battled to the last court, ultimately dropping the rivalry match.

Florida State’s Maelie Monfils and Laura Putz took court three over Jaquelyn Ogunwale and Aely Arai, 6-1, before the Seminoles pair of No. 89 Eva Shaw and Maria Parra Romero clinched the doubles point, 6-2, over No. 25 Xinyi Nong and Raquel Gonzalez at the top court. 

No. 63 Alexa Noel took down No. 112 Eva Shaw, 6-4, 6-1, at the top spot to tie it, followed by No. 109 Gonzalez defeating MB Deatherage on court three, 6-2, 6-4 to take the lead for the Hurricanes. The Seminoles then tied it at two-all following a court five win by Romero over Arai, 6-4, 6-3, before Miami regained the lead after Ogunwale took down Kristyna Lavickova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, on court two. Florida State tied it once again shortly after when Laura Putz earned the 6-4, 7-5 win over Vargas on court six.

Coming down to court four, Nong battled in the third set for a chance to give Miami the comeback win, but fell 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 to Millie Bissett.

The Hurricanes will travel to Dallas, Texas, to face SMU on March 23.
