8/23/2024 | Women’s Soccer

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic women’s soccer Head Coach Patrick Baker, sophomore forward Olivia Bori, goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez, and defender Leila Etemadi reflect on the 2024 preseason.

The Owls discuss what they focused on during preseason and some of the expectations for the 2024 season with new captains, familiar faces, and newcomers. The program announced that graduate goalkeeper Lexi Gonzalez and junior defender Leila Etemadi were named the 2024 captains prior to the start of preseason.

Now in their second year in the American Athletic Conference, Florida Atlantic was picked fifth in the AAC preseason poll. Gonzalez, defender Jodi Smith, and midfielder Sofia Voldby were named as the three players to watch for FAU.

The Owls finished the 2023 season with a 3-3-3 record in conference play. Florida Atlantic made its first appearance in the AAC Championship Tournament and beat South Florida (1-0) to advance to the semifinals.

Sunday, Aug. 25, marks the start of traveling for the 2024 season, as the Owls will head to Louisiana for their first road match. Last season, Florida Atlantic faced the Ragin Cajuns in Boca Raton when forward Sloane Young scored her second goal of the season in the 15th minute of the match to take the lead. Just before the end of the first half, Michelle Horan scored her first goal of the season to extend the lead. Louisiana answered back with a goal, but it was not enough because the Owls came out with the 2-1 win.

This marks the first match of a back-to-back road swing for Florida Atlantic’s upcoming week. Once the Owls return from Lafayette, they will get back on the road to take on one of the two SEC opponents they will face this season, facing Alabama on Thursday, Aug. 29. and Tennessee on Sept. 8. Kickoff for Alabama is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST, and Tennessee is scheduled for 1 p.m.
