WBB: Williams Propels Miami to 62-60 Victory Over Wake Forest

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Cameron Williams recorded her second consecutive double-double, as she matched a career-high by scoring 23 points on 9-10 shooting, while also grabbing 11 rebounds, fueling the University of Miami women’s basketball team to narrow 62-60 victory over Wake Forest (9-18, 2-14) 

The Hurricanes (14-13, 4-12) shot 47.9 percent from the field and recorded 12 assists on 23 made field goals in the win.  

In addition to Williams, Haley Cavinder also had a stellar performance for the Canes. She scored 18 points, corralled six boards, and recorded a team-high four assists in 39 minutes of action.  

Darrione Rogers was tremendous off the bench for Miami, scoring nine points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Rogers also pulled down seven rebounds, two of which came on the offensive glass.  

Miami outrebounded Wake Forest 33-28, and the Canes recorded three blocks. Miami limited the Demon Deacons to just 41.4 percent shooting from the field, including 26.3 percent from beyond the arc. 

Wake Forest jumped out to a fast start, building a 12-4 lead at the 5:22 mark in the first quarter, as Miami struggled to slow down the Demon Deacons offense. The Canes trailed 20-14 after the first 10 minutes of play. Williams was tremendous in the quarter, as she scored eight points on a perfect 4-4 shooting. 

The Canes quickly trimmed the deficit down to just two points after a Haley Cavinder driving layup with 6:23 remaining before halftime; however, Wake Forest ripped off a 7-0 run to take a 29-20 lead with 3:58 on the clock. The Canes ended the first half on a 6-2 run, as they trailed 31-26 at the break. 

The two squads went back-and-forth throughout the entire third quarter, and Miami found themselves trailing by six points entering the final frame, as Wake Forest held a 49-43 advantage with 10 minutes to go.  

The Canes came out with high intensity to start the final period, as they put together a 10-2 run over the first 3:52 of the quarter, claiming a 53-51 lead with 6:08 to go. 

Wake Forest retook the lead at the 5:49 mark, and neither team managed to lead by more than three points down the stretch.  

The Demon Deacons made a critical layup to take a 60-58 lead over the Canes with 1:18 to go; but, with the score remaining the same two possessions later, Rogers buried a corner 3-pointer, giving Miami a one-point lead with 17 seconds to go. Miami came up with back-to-back defensive stops, as they went on to earn the hard-fought 62-60 win. 

The Hurricanes will return to the court on Thursday, when they are slated to travel to California to face Stanford with tip-off scheduled for 10 p.m. (ET).
