BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women’s basketball team fell short on Wednesday night, falling 54-44 on the road to Wichita State at Charles Koch Arena.
The Owls drop to 10-14 on the season and 2-9 in AAC play, while the Shockers move to 8-16 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ta’ziah Jenks got the Owls started at the free throw line followed by a Jada Moore layup. After the Moore layup, the Owls then began a scoring drought of over three minutes. Following a Wichita State turnover, Mya Perry was able to convert a fastbreak layup, ending the drought. A second turnover for the Shockers led to another Owls layup helping cut the deficit to two going into the first media timeout. It would then be Perry connecting on her first three-pointer of the game, ending the first quarter with the Owls down 13-12.
The second quarter began with a three pointer from Perry which was just the beginning of a flurry from her. An 8-0 run fueled by two more Perry threes helped give the Owls their largest lead of the first half, 23-17. Wichita State stopped the bleeding with an and-one before the Owls responded with a Maria Myklebust three. FAU grew their lead to seven before a run by Wichita State, cutting the score to 30-29 going into the halftime break.
Out of the break, Wichita State struck first, scoring back-to-back buckets to regain the lead, 33-30, before Perry connected on her fifth three pointer of the game tying the score at 33 a piece. Another Shockers 4-0 run would put the Owls down by four at the first media timeout. A Wichita State 12-2 run would give them a 45-34 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Florida Atlantic opened the fourth quarter with a Perry layup before a quick Shocker bucket to follow. The Owls eventually cut the lead back down to seven but a scoring drought of over two minutes caused the team to play the foul game late. Overall, the Owls were unable to find their rhythm late, falling to Wichita State in the end.
POSTGAME WITH HEAD COACH JENNIFER SULLIVAN
“Obviously, a disappointing performance. I felt really good going into this game, and I think our team did too. Even throughout the game, I thought there were a lot of chances to close the gap and get over the hump. I thought we got out to a solid start, but things within our control, layups and free throws, were the nagging cause there. We’re moving in the right direction, just need to regroup, get home safely, and figure it out.”
