VB: Volleyball Closes out Non-Conference Play with Sunshine Invitational

The Bulls will play USC-Upstate, North Florida, and Alabama A&M 

TAMPA, September 14, 2023 –The University of South Florida volleyball will close out its non-conference slate with the UNF Sunshine Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.   

Last weekend, South Florida traveled to South Dakota for their first road test of the 2023 season. The Bulls swept IUPUI, but fell to hosts, South Dakota in five sets on Friday, and Drake on Saturday in three sets. 

Against South Dakota, Amanda DeWitt (Jupiter) matched her career-high of 18 kills. She first set it last season against Memphis.  

On Friday, junior setter Caroline Dykes (Flower Mound, Texas) surpassed the 2,000-assist mark. It came in the fourth set when DeWitt gave the Bulls a two-point lead.  

Caroline joins Kelsey O’Loughlin (Fort Lauderdale) in the 2,000 assists club. O’Loughlin hit the milestone last season against McNeese.  

Freshman libero, Lia Schneider (St. Charles, Ill.), and freshman middle blocker, Lauren Lewis (Tarpon Springs) have already made their impressions on the team. Schneider leads the team in digs with 110 and 3.67 digs per set. She’s been named the Most Outstanding Libero in two tournaments so far.  

At the net, Lewis has been a brick wall, blocking 23 balls so far, and leading the team. She is also fourth on the team in assists with seven.

Scouting the opponent:  

  • Ashleigh Nicoll leads the team in kills with 92. She finished this past weekend with 14 kills in the Spartans sweep over North Carolina A&T.
  • Ady O’Grady leads the team with 23 total blocks. She has matched a season-high six blocks twice this season. 

North Florida (5-4)

  • Annie Antar is averaging 8.27 assists per set. She has a total of 273 assists through the first three weekends.  
  • Rocio Moro had 61 digs last weekend. She leads the team with 150 on the season.

  • Bailey Duckett is averaging 2.42 kills per set and leads with 63 on the season.  
  • At the net, Ajanae Cressey has 23 blocks on the season. She is averaging 0.85 blocks per set.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls’ program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972 and is entering its 52nd campaign in 2023-24.
