USF’s Oscar Resano Tabbed AAC Rookie of the Week

IRVING, Texas (March 15, 2021) – University of South Florida men’s soccer freshman Oscar Resano has been named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 14. It is Resano’s second conference honor of his young career. This marks the fourth-straight week that the Bulls have had a player chosen as Rookie of the Week.

Also, Josue Monge and Marcus Murphy were named to the Weekly Honor Roll.

USF recorded its fourth consecutive win last week with a 3-1 victory at Memphis. The match against the Tigers was the first of a two-match road stretch that ends this Saturday at No. 17 SMU.

Resano scored his second goal of the season finding the back of the net in the 30th minute. The score was the third goal of the night for USF in its win at Memphis. The victory was the Bulls’ fourth-straight. Resano got off three shots against the Tigers, including one on goal.

Monge recorded his second goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner against the Tigers. Monge had three shots, including two on goal, however, found the back of the net by converting on a penalty kick in the 15th minute of play.

For the fourth-straight week, Marcus Murphy anchored the USF defense that has just allowed only one goal in each of the last four games. Murphy guided the defense that allowed just four shots in the first-half against Memphis, with only one coming on goal. During that first half stretch USF jumped out to a 3-0 lead, and Memphis didn’t score until the 65th minute of play.

Following its game at SMU this Saturday, USF will return home on March 27 when it welcomes UCF to Corbett Stadium, in the second edition of the War on I-4. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

USF Men’s Soccer competed in the school’s first ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3. Since then, the oldest program on campus has built a winning tradition, claiming 14 conference championships and making 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 3 trips to the elite eight.

The Bulls have advanced to the postseason in 18 of the past 19 years, including 12 NCAA Tournament appearances during that period.

USF Soccer concluded the 2019 season with an 11-7-1 overall record, earning an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. Four players earned AAC honors, highlighted by first team selections Avionne Flanagan and Javain Brown. Adrian Billhardt was tabbed a second team selection. In addition, Brown and Salvatore Mazzaferro were named to The AAC All-Rookie Team. Head coach Bob Butehorn returns to lead USF in his fourth season on the sidelines.
