USF WBB: South Florida’s Jose Fernandez Named 2025 USA Basketball Women’s U19 National Team Assistant Coach

TAMPA, Fla. – May 5, 2025 –  USA Basketball has selected South Florida women’s basketball Head Coach Jose Fernandez as an assistant coach for the 2025 USA Basketball Women’s U19 National Team, announced by the national governing body on Monday.

“I’m incredibly honored to be selected as an assistant coach with USA Basketball for the second year in a row,” said Coach Fernandez. “I’m looking forward to pursuing another gold medal alongside our incredible coaches and student-athletes this summer.”

USA Basketball’s appointment marks the second consecutive year that Coach Fernandez will serve as an assistant coach. Last summer, Fernandez captured a gold medal alongside USA Basketball’s U18 squad in the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup.

The 2025 USA Women’s U19 National Team will be led by Teri Moren (Indiana University), with Niele Ivey (University of Notre Dame) and Fernandez serving as assistant coaches.

Moren, Ivey, and Fernandez will lead the USA at the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic, from July 12-20. Last year, the trio guided the 2024 USA Women’s U18 National Team to the gold medal at the FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

The USA will look to capture its fourth straight gold medal and 11th overall in the competition since its inception in 1985.

  • Won a Gold Medal with USA Basketball’s Women’s U18 National Team in the 2024 U18 FIBA AmeriCup as an Assistant Coach.
  • Named an assistant with USA Basketball’s Women’s U19 National Team.
  • Recruited and coached players from over 22 different countries.
  • 14 straight 19-win seasons and 12 20-win seasons.
  • Recorded his 485th career victory during the 2024-25 season.
  • Two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2018, 2021).
  • South Florida won the 2008-09 WNIT Championship, defeating the Kansas Jayhawks.
  • Recruited and coached over 40 all-conference players, two Associated Press Honorable Mention All-Americans, three members of the USF Athletics Hall of Fame, two AAC Players of the Year, two AAC Newcomers of the Year, four AAC Freshmen of the Year, one AAC Defensive Player of the Year, one AAC Most Improved Player, and seven WNBA draft picks.
